ABOUT THE PROJECT

Designer Katerina Churina and her team were presented with a complex challenge: the reconstruction and redesign of an apartment within a historic building in the heart of Amsterdam. A key requirement was to ensure the space could comfortably accommodate guests or be suitable for rental.

CLIENT

The apartment owner is an avid enthusiast of sailing, photography, and the martial art of Kendo. Given the apartment's limited space, the team needed to design efficient and comfortable storage solutions for a variety of items, such as equipment, maritime charts, photography gear, books, and even sails.

ONGOING

OUTCOME

To preserve the ambiance of the old Dutch house, the original windows were retained. The initial layout lacked washbasins, featuring only a toilet with a shower. Additionally, a spiral staircase from the entrance occupied part of the space.

Through a comprehensive redesign, the team successfully created a fully functional bathroom featuring a large washbasin and a separate toilet with a smaller basin. The staircase, which previously occupied a portion of the room, was clad with decorative "honeycomb" tiles.

A timeless, monochromatic interior in black and white tones was chosen. Natural wood imparts a sense of warmth and comfort to the space.

The primary challenge involved the small and unusually shaped dimensions of each area. For instance, the narrow and long kitchen could not accommodate all essential appliances. The solution involved creating custom-designed adjacent furniture constructions for both the kitchen and bedroom.

Thanks to these constructions, the kitchen was able to house an oven and a drawer for storing crockery; part of the furniture is built into the headboard of the bed, extending beyond the wall. The small bedroom is designed in black to create an illusion of depth within the space. The bed is equipped with a lift mechanism for additional storage. This compact furniture ensemble was meticulously designed by Churina Design and manufactured under our supervision.
